About Me

Hi!  My name is Erin.  When I started this blog in 2009, this was the About Me:

I am a former junior high school teacher turned stay-at-home mom.  I thought I'd teach and have babies.  End.  Of.  Story.  And then I found blogging.  My blog documents this journey and all my on-the-spot observations on life and motherhood.”

At that time, I was staying home with two babies and knew I was not cut out to teach junior high English.  I did know that I loved to write and blogging seemed like a natural fit for me.

However, a lot has happened since I first clicked the publish button on my very first post (and by the way, the publish button still gives me goose bumps)!

I teach Social Media Strategy for Business at Walsh College and Center for Creative Studies.  I have discovered that teaching adults is just different enough than teaching junior high – I’m challenged, but not filled with despair.

I partake in freelance social media projects, often with my favorite company, HayThere Social Media.

I’m even starting to give presentations about social media.

All these new adventures have created a new feeling of contentment that I didn’t’ know was possible.  And none of this would have been possible if I didn’t follow the advice of my therapist to start a blog.  (I’m choosing to believe that she encouraged me because she thought I had a gift, not because she was tired of listening to my sob story).

Before babies and the blog, I was pretty cynical in my views about finding happiness.  I’ve discovered that happiness isn’t something elusive to be found, like a mythical pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.  For me, happiness is something that I have to create.

Not that everything is perfect; I have not discovered the holy grail of balancing motherhood and career.  (Please see all posts from Summer 2013 where I just about fall off my tightrope and my kids’ brains turn to mush from too much screen time.  Here is just one of many).  I’m still trying to figure this all out, but I do feel that I am on the right path.

My love of writing and storytelling combined with my need to find my tribe of like-minded people has created a wonderful and completely unexpected second act.

Mommy on the Spot is where I will continue to share my on-the-spot observations on life and motherhood.  You can email me at spotonmommy {at} yahoo.com.  You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook.  I’ve also been known to spend some time on Instagram and Pinterest.  For a working portfolio of my work, please check out erinjandarawlings.com.
